Dans le Michigan, David, menuisier, mène une vie modeste avec Heather, sa compagne depuis le lycée. Suite à un accident, Heather perd un bras et demande à David de lui fabriquer une prothèse en or. Mais lorsque la maladie la gagne, Heather doit faire un choix : enlever son bras d'or pour survivre ou le garder pour rester la plus jolie femme du comté, quitte à en mourir.
