Joe Yabuki, 15 ans, est un jeune orphelin roublard et bagarreur. Arrivant dans un bidonville, ses talents au combat attirent l'intérêt de Tange Danpei, ancien boxeur alcoolique qui décide de l'entraîner pour en faire un boxeur exceptionnel. Seulement, Joe Yabuki n'est pas trop intéressé par cette idée, et a des problèmes avec les autorités.
1Ce sont les yeux d’une bête sauvage !
Début des années 1970. À l'époque où le Japon était encore en train de se restructurer après les effets négatifs de la Seconde Guerre mondiale, il existait d'innombrables bidonvilles dans la banlieue de Tokyo, la capitale japonaise. Joe Yabuki apparaît dans l'un de ces bidonvilles, et il y rencontre Tange Danpei, un vieil accro de la boxe qui, parce que sa propre carrière de boxeur et d'entraîneur a été ruinée, est devenu alcoolique. Cependant, voyant le potentiel de boxe de Joe, il décide d'arrêter de boire et se consacre à faire de Joe un boxeur.
2La vie dans la jungle carrée
Dès ses premiers jours dans la favela, Joe rencontre un groupe d'enfants qui se prennent d'affection pour lui. Il commence aussi à faire des bêtises en se mêlant aux bagarres de la foule et vit ses premiers jours en trichant et en se moquant des autres.
3Affronte les crocs de la bête !
Tange Danpei insiste pour que Joe apprenne la boxe et le paie même pour devenir boxeur. Cependant, Joe "prétend" aimer ce sport et trompe son tuteur, tandis qu'il commence à gagner de l'argent à côté, en effectuant de sales besognes aux dépens de Yoko Shiraki, la fille du président de Shiraki Corporations, une femme riche et aisée. Après avoir inventé d'innombrables mensonges sur la gestion d'un orphelinat en sommeil, Joe lui vole beaucoup d'argent et l'utilise pour mener une vie de luxe qui ne durera pas.

Tange Danpei découvre que Joe a menti en disant qu'il était boxeur, et qu'il a gagné des milliers de yens en bottant le de Yoko Shiraki. Danpei est dévasté, et pour que Joe ait encore un avenir, il décide de l'abattre avec son propre poing.
5Pour l'amour de demain ! Partie 1
Tange Danpei bat Joe à plate couture et l'emmène à la police. Joe est arrêté pour ses crimes et, selon sa conduite, risque de passer des années dans une maison de redressement pour mineurs. Cependant, même après que Danpei l'ait arrêté, il continue à enseigner la boxe à Joe par le biais de lettres.
6Enflamme-toi ! Jab gauche !
Dans la solitude de la prison, Joe continue de recevoir des leçons de boxe de Danpei, son tuteur, par le biais de lettres. En lisant la lettre intitulée "Pour demain - Leçon deux", Joe apprend en théorie à lancer des directs du droit.
7Ne jugez pas le loup !
Joe se rend au tribunal, où le juge étudie son passé et décide de la peine à lui infliger. Bien que Joe ait eu un passé terrible où il était orphelin de père et de mère et fuyait sans cesse les orphelinats en raison de problèmes de mauvais traitements, le juge décide tout de même que Joe est coupable et qu'il doit passer quelques années dans une maison de correction pour mineurs, afin de payer pour ses crimes.

Joe and Nishi spend their first night at the Toko Special Juvenile Training School and are quickly put into their places.

Joe arrive à la maison de redressement pour mineurs de Toko, où il passera quelques années avant de purger sa peine. Après s'être rétabli, Joe tente à nouveau de s'échapper et y parvient cette fois, mais comme il ne supporte pas de fuir Rikiishi, qui l'a assommé avec son crochet, il décide de retourner en prison, dans l'espoir de se venger un jour de son rival.
11Brûle au fond de l'enfer !
Yoko Shiraki, ainsi que son père, Danpei et les enfants, se rendent dans une prison pour jouer une pièce de théâtre pour les détenus. En voyant le visage de Yoko à la prison, Joe commence à se disputer avec elle, ce qui entraîne une bagarre avec Rikiishi, qui voulait se battre avec lui là-bas. Heureusement, Danpei leur propose de résoudre le problème en organisant un match de boxe non officiel à l'intérieur de la prison.
12Crie vers le soleil ardent !
Le match de boxe entre Joe et Rikiishi est prévu depuis quelques jours. Comme Joe n'a aucune expérience, Danpei enseigne la troisième leçon de "Pour demain", en frappant Joe avec une technique de boxe de haut niveau : le Backstab. Après avoir reçu une autre commotion et avoir été assommé, Joe récupère et commence à s'entraîner à la Contre-Croix qu'il a apprise, frappant quelques détenus pour son combat du dimanche contre Rikiishi.

Joe and Rikiishi prepare for their upcoming match. After seeing just how powerful Joe's new punch is, Rikiishi devises a unique training method to counter it.

Joe and Rikiishi finally have their first match. But for some reason, Danpei tells Joe to let Rikiishi keep knocking him down. Who will be the winner in the end?

Moved by the fight between Joe and Rikiishi, the inmates also start boxing.

Tange becomes the full-time boxing coach at the juvenile training school on Nogiku Island. Joe seems to finally be interested in training more with Tange, but Tange suddenly seems distant.

Nishi loses all three matches so far after becoming a pro and loses his confidence. Tange, Joe, and the kids try to find a way to build his confidence back up and Kinoko finds a surprising solution.
